Ludlow’s fences, rebuilt in recent years, take some jumping. Since the start of 2016, 10.43% of participants have fallen or unseated their riders on chases at the Shropshire venue. Warwick, on the other hand, saw only 4.42% of chase runners fall or unseat in the same period and that’s a big worry for THE LATE LEGEND, a Warwick winner last time out. He jumped well that day but it’s interesting to note that after he won at Sedgefield in November 2020 jockey Sean Bowen, quoted in the Racing Post, said ‘The Late Legend didn’t jump great when he won at Huntingdon and was worse last time, he was never really going. He backs off them a bit, they’re stiff fences. He enjoys it round here, they’re only small fences and he attacked them a bit better.’

It’s quite strange that a horse who is unbeaten in three chase starts at Sedgefield and has not been asked to race there since December 2020. He runs over the tricky fences at Ludlow for the first time today and I’m expecting him to struggle – sell in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market. Fixed odds punters might want to chance outsider of five MR MAFIA, who has run as though needing his first two starts back this spring.

LUDLOW 4.05

ROMANOR’s recent chase efforts have been littered with jumping errors and he also raced freely in the early stages when trailing home last of five at Newton Abbot on his latest outing. Ludlow’s fences takes some jumping (see 3.00 preview) and he could prove vulnerable again. He’s failed to win from eight attempts over fences on right-handed or figure-of-eight tracks and I’m happy to sell in the Spread 50-25-10 race market.
