Film Dive into the Heat Finding a Way Against Charlotte
Film Dive into the Heat Finding a Way Against Charlotte
Sep 21, 2024 12:52 PM

I took a dive into the film of the Miami Heat’s win over the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday night, mainly focusing on the 4th quarter, overtime, and double overtime.

Between a Duncan Robinson boost, Kyle Lowry takeover mode, suffocating Heat defense, and unique play designing from Erik Spoelstra, it’s clear this was a pretty interesting one.

So, let’s take a look…

Miami’s smoothest actions all came when being worked through Duncan

(PS: this Hornets team ball watches)

– Quick DHO, they watch the slip, but the back line defense quite literally “watches” the slip as well, as he hits Bam wide open

– DHO again, hits PJ on the slip, floater pic.twitter.com/lqXoImBsXs

Working through Bam on the elbow, Duncan rub screen for Jimmy, and Bam lasers it inside a little too late

Butler fights for it and gets the lay-in

You feel more comfortable when they’re relying on their movement sets late like this pic.twitter.com/lvXjtE9BvG

Nothing to see here

Just Bam realizing he’s faster than everybody on the floor when on the break, and nobody can stay in front of him

Cuts it to one possession pic.twitter.com/lm5HgkMkAE

Duncan Robinson really bailed them out in the 4th

Shots like this are why he closes when they’re down so many guys

He puts so much pressure on a defense, plus has been outstanding with off-ball defensive positioning

Just need to clean up the on-ball stuff pic.twitter.com/sYw1dnW86Z

This is the beauty of this defensive trio: Butler-Tucker-Adebayo

Ball forces a switch, which means absolutely nothing with PJ and Jimmy in the action

Ball tries to break PJ down, but oh wait, there’s Bam coming from the weak-side for the swat

Such a scary half court defense pic.twitter.com/qVXvh2xl5a

You work so hard to get back in this game, while finally finding some rhythm in your movement sets

And this is the final shot

If it’s a Butler iso, it better mean he has a favorable matchup for a potential blow-by

Otherwise……. pic.twitter.com/OnrzMT3ZST

Now into OT we go, fast forward to the 2 minute mark

This is Lowry saying ‘Ok our movement is totally off again, now I have to make a play.’

Which he did pic.twitter.com/6ydv9dySib

We know Lowry can get by Harrell on this possession, but the question becomes, can he find enough space around the rim for it to be worth it

Nice jump step to block off Harrell behind him, then does a Lowry of all Lowry shots and flips it up and in

But that close off is crucial pic.twitter.com/AeNE6PJldt

I’m a BIG fan of Lowry-Bam empty corner pick and rolls late in games

Remember this

We’ll see it much more in the playoffs in tight games, specifically against drop pic.twitter.com/Jo3i3l60iI

1 second left

Don’t understand Lowry throwing it in here, who just scored 8 straight

Plus PJ in weakside corner not a threat

PJ should inbound, and I’d go to Duncan/Lowry off the catch, with Butler/Bam screening and slipping for a potential lob

Another Jimmy fadeaway pic.twitter.com/M1Og43azwC

This Heat defense was completely elite in double OT

With Bam getting pulled away from the on-ball actions, they had to rely heavily on paint protection with taking charges

Butler there waiting here pic.twitter.com/zwZ772EZKC

Kyle “bail out” Lowry once again lol pic.twitter.com/KmZU8XfMmu

Just watch Bam Adebayo on this possession pic.twitter.com/Q43YK60igt

When positioned on the wing with Butler defending that strong-side corner, I’d advise you not to attack that way

He strips it, dives on the floor, and Melo fouls out in the process pic.twitter.com/8fQ9A3BY4z

When Jimmy and Bam are able to defend off the ball on the same side, man is it a treat to watch

Allows him to be that “wreckless gambler,” as he told me recently

He edges up knowing Bam is there to recover, but watch the recovery speed of Jimmy instead

Somehow gets the block pic.twitter.com/wne34bcbKV

Genius Spo play designs late in Double OT

Spacing off all night, he has Lowry run a top of the key iso, while the other 4 line up across the baseline

Butler flares up for a ghost screen and due to the focus on Lowry, gets a simple pull-up J

Same thing right after for Jimmy’s 3 pic.twitter.com/GHKzbFl4Op

— Brady Hawk (@BradyHawk305) February 18, 2022

Finally, the ATO

PJ and Bam in each corner all the way down the floor

Jimmy shoots up to half-court to pull his defender

Inbound to Duncan

As it looks like he’s about to get trapped as they’re playing for the foul, Lowry cuts back door as Harrell doubles

Easy lay-in pic.twitter.com/moZMDqhOe6
