Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has urged Arsene Wenger not to sign Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas in the summer transfer window.
The Spain international left the Emirates in the summer of 2011 after spending eight years with the North London club. However, it is believed that Catalan club are set to offload the 27-year-old to raise funds to bring in reinforcements this summer.
The Independent reports Fabregas has been linked with a move to the Emirates, while the Gunners’ league rivals Manchester United are also monitoring the midfielder’s situation at Camp Nou.
However, Parlour, the former Arsenal man believes the addition of Fabregas will see Wenger struggle in accommodating the Spaniard in the North London side’s midfield.
“The problem with Fabregas is where do you put him in the team They have got very similar players to Fabregas – they have Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere – if you bring Fabregas back where do you fit him in” Parlour said.
“He was great for the club but forwards should be much more of a priority. You look at Manchester City and Liverpool and they have much better forwards.”
According to the reports, the club will hand Wenger with £100m transfer kitty to bring in players to the Emirates in the upcoming transfer window. The Independent report claims Barcelona are willing to part ways with Fabregas for a transfer fee of £45m.
Should Wenger manage to re-sign the Spain midfielder, he will be spend close to half his summer transfer budget on Fabregas. This would leave Arsenal and the Frenchman is tough situation, especially when the Gunners’ priority is to sign a world class striker.
In addition to this, Bacary Sagna is a free agent and the departure of the France international will see the Gunners find a replacement for the right-back.
