Many believe that failing to sign a world class striker (both in summer and in January transfer window) was one of the reasons why Arsenal crumbled under pressure in the Premier League title race.
Last summer the Gunners had tried to sign Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez, but failed to land either of them. Arsenal were also interested in Karim Benzema but in the end they chose to sign his Real Madrid team mate Mesut Ozil instead.
However, this summer, the Gunners would move heaven and earth to land a world class striker, and according to The Telegraph, the North Londoners are plotting a move to sign their long term target Benzema.
The Gunners consider Benzema as an ideal signing and are aware that the 26-year-old France striker could be allowed to leave Real Madrid this summer.
Benzema has just only one year left on his contract leaving Madrid with a major decision to make as to whether renew his contract or sell him knowing they would command a fee in the region of £30m.
Yesterday Spanish newspaper El Confidencial reported Florentino Perez is looking to sign Luis Suarez. It remains to be seen, how serious are their interests in luring the Uruguayan, and should they succeed in signing him or any other top striker, it could pave way for Benzema to move elsewhere.
Arsene Wenger is also pursuing other strike options, including Bayern Munich’s Mario Mandzukic, but has missed out on Josip Drmic, who has joined Bayer Leverkusen and would likely to miss out Diego Costa, who seems Chelsea-bound.
