Martinez joined Atletico last summer from Porto for around €35m, but he has failed to impress at the Calderon. He dropped down the pecking order at the club, after managing only two goals in 15 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side.

The 29-year-old was linked with a move to Chelsea in a potential swap deal for Diego Costa in the January transfer window, but the deal didn’t materialise in the end, as the Blues were unwilling to sell Costa.

According to reports from the Guardian, Chinese club Guangzhou, who are managed by the former Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, have shelled out a massive €42m fee to sign the Colombian striker.

Once again Jorge Mendes, Martinez’s agent, has played a major role in getting a favourable deal for all the parties involved here.

Martinez did not attend his training on Monday due to personal reasons. Mendes tried his best to negotiate a best possible deal with Atletico, and the La Liga club eventually agreed to sell the striker on Tuesday.

The Chinese league have been attracting top players from all around the world and addition of Martinez is a big scalp for them. Earlier last month, Chinese club Jiangsu Suning signed Ramires from Chelsea for £25m.
