Blues Legend Slams Chelsea for Allowing Sturridge Join Liverpool

The England international left the West London club and joined the Merseyside outfit in the January transfer window of 2013. Since his move to Anfield, Sturridge has been in fine form for Brendan Rodgers’ side, having netted 31 goals in the league for the Reds.

At Chelsea, the 24-year-old was played out on the wider position ahead of his preferred position as a central striker. Lampard believed lack of game time and being played out of position made the former Manchester City man frustrated.

“I’m really pleased for Studge because, at Chelsea, I think he was a bit frustrated. He felt he could have played more. He felt the position he was playing in was one he wasn’t happy with and he felt it was good for him to move,” Lampard said, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

“It was maybe not good business for Chelsea. It looks bad when you look back, but, at the time, you never know. Individually, for him, it was a good move. He has gone from strength to strength.”

“I think he does get the credit he deserves now, but with what Luis Suarez does alongside him at Liverpool, maybe that takes the edge off the praise.”

“But, for an English striker scoring as regularly as he has in the Premier League, it has been amazing and he is the sort of striker, the sort of attacking player, we have been crying out for with England.”

“He is someone who can make something out of nothing, as he did when he scored against Peru last week, so he has emerged and deserves to be on this stage,” he concluded.

During the same transfer window in which Sturridge left Chelsea, the Blues signed Demba Ba from Newcastle United to partner Fernando Torres. However, the duo, along with Samuel Eto’o have failed to fire for the west London club.

Meanwhile, Sturridge and Luis Suarez have been instrumental in scoring goals for Liverpool this season. It is still unknown if the England striker would have developed if he still continued at Chelsea.

However, looking at his current form for Liverpool, one may think that he would have solved Chelsea’s striker problems if he was given more playing time and played in his preferred role.
