Borussia Dortmund enter race to sign Andre Schurrle, Wolfsburg officials in London for talks

Nov 19, 2024 9:43 AM

The Andre Schurrle transfer saga seems to drag on and on. The Chelsea midfielder has attracted a lot of interest from the Bundesliga this month, but has also stated that he would like to stay at Stamford Bridge. Talks of a move though, just won’t go away. With Chelsea interested in signing Juan Cuadrado and Marco Reus, it seems Schurrle will eventually have to make the move back to his home country, either this month or in the summer.

Borussia Dortmund’s Reus will be available for €25 million in the summer, and the club are almost helpless in preventing his departure. A long list of clubs, including Chelsea, are expected to fight for his signature. Despite Dortmund firmly being a club on the descent, they are going to have to find a replacement for their superstar. Even though they are battling relegation in the Bundesliga this season, the Westfalonstadion still remains an attraction for big players across Europe.

Dortmund’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Hans-Joachim Watzke has said in an interview, as reported here by Bild, that Schurrle is the kind of player that would be a candidate to replace Reus.

“He is a similar player type as Reus, fits perfectly into Klopp concept (young, fast), and knows the Bundesliga well.”

On the other hand, Wolfsburg, a club strongly linked with Schurrle, have denied lodging an official bid for the player. Contrary to previous reports, which stated that a bid in the region of €32.5 million had been made, Wolfsburg manager Klaus Allofs has said that there is ‘nothing to it’.

Reports from The Telegraph though, have stated that Schurrle’s father Joachim met with Wolfsburg club officials on Monday to discuss a potential move. To be a part of the negotiations, the winger is set to miss the Capital One semi-final second leg against Liverpool tonight.

Schurrle played no part in the FA Cup fourth round defeat against Bradford City at the weekend, despite Jose Mourinho stating the day before that he will be in the line-up. The manager stated after the game that the German had a slight back injury, but there may be more to his omission than that.
