Borussia Dortmund have signed the extremely highly rated teenager Ousmane Dembélé from Rennes for an undisclosed fee. The 18-year-old has been linked with a bevy of clubs, most prominently with Liverpool in the last couple of months.
Dembélé signed a five-year contract with Borussia Dortmund and has ended speculation around his future in doing so as he caps off an unbelievable debut season. The forward scored 12 goals and grabbed five assists in 25 league games in France. Unsurprisingly, he was voted the best young player in France this season.
“Dortmund have looked at me for a long time and have always been in close contact with me and their conduct has really impressed me,” he said.
He is reported to have cost Dortmund a sum in the region of around €15 million, which is an absolute steal if true. The 18-year-old has been incredible and considering the outrageous amount of money talented youngsters “with potential” go for these days, landing lim for €15 million is great business on the German club’s end. It’s especially great that they got the deal wrapped up quickly considering the amount of European clubs looking at him. Rennes might feel they could have got a lot more for the player.
“The way he stood his ground for such a long time in the face of the numerous high-quality offers from all over Europe commands my respect,” Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said. “It’s not a given and shows his character.”
“I can’t wait to play in the Bundesliga in front of 80,000 at the Westfalenstadion and take to the pitch in the Champions League with my new teammates,” the youngster added.
The player’s arrival will boost Dortmund who despite having a great league season have lost the title to Bayern Munich and worse still, have lost their captain Mats Hummels to their direct rivals this week itself.
Liverpool were supposedly interested in the player but are now reported to be focusing their interests on Bayern Munich’s Mario Götze who Dortmund have also been linked to. Liverpool have a good chance of landing the German, if reports are to be believed, and if they win the Europa League, they will also have the ability to offer the player Champions League, which becomes a major factor for any player with top aspirations.
