Brazil: Luiz Felipe Scolari SACKED after dismal World Cup run

Dec 26, 2024 10:35 PM

The Confederation of Brazilian Football has decided against renewing the contract of beleaguered boss Luiz Felipe Scolari, according to widespread reports, with the 65-year-old leaving his post following consecutive horror defeats during the 2014 World Cup.

According to Brazilian station Globo TV, the CBF will officially announce Scolari’s departure later on Monday, with the former Chelsea manager paying the price for two heinous defeats in their own back yard. Scolari had said that he would let the CBF decide his fate after Brazil were beaten 3-0 by Netherlands in the World Cup third-place playoff on Saturday.

The loss to the Dutch, coupled with the 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany seems to have been enough for Scolari’s second tenure to come to an end. Considering the defeat to Joachim Low’s Germany was not only Brazil’s first defeat on home soil since 1975, but also the biggest ever defeat at the World Cup for the Selecao, there can be no real surprise that Scolari has lost his job.

Scolari guided Brazil to the 2002 World Cup, their last success, and since his return to the manager’s post in 2013, Brazil won 19, drew six and lost four of his 29 games in charge.

But with both the semi-final and playoff performances seriously lacking in quality and invention, the CBF have seemingly decided to amputate, with Scolari the first and most obvious casualty from what was a disastrous end to Brazil’s World Cup adventure.
