It was yet another memorable night for the La Liga clubs, as Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla all opened their group stage accounts with full three points in the Champions League. It was also a night to forget for the two Manchester clubs, both suffered defeats.

French champions Paris Saint-Germain also registered full three points while Benfica and German club Wolfsburg also tasted victories.

Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first player in the history of Champions League to have reached the 80-goal-milestone. The Portuguese, who was tied with Lionel Messi on 77 goals prior to the match, scored a fine hat-trick to achieve this feat. His team-mate Karim Benzema, who opened the scoring for Los Blancos, also entered the hall of fame, after breaking into the All Time Champions League Top 10 Goal Scorer list.

Manuel Pellegrini, the Manchester City manager, felt after the match that the best team lost on the night. City are taught hard lessons yet again what they still need (more than money, it’s the mentality) to join the elites in Europe. Juventus weren’t playing well this season up to this point, having failed to win a single game from their opening three matches, but the Bianconeri raised their game to a high level when it mattered most. The task for City gets all the more difficult as Sevilla thumped German club Gladbach 3-0 at Sanchez Pizjuan.

Manchester United started the game brightly and looked in total control until a poor tackle from Hector Moreno resulted in a nasty injury to Luke Shaw, who was stretched off immediately and is set to remain on the sidelines for the end of the year at least.

To add insult to injury, Moreno scored the equaliser for the home side, and winger Luciano Narsingh put the final touches after burying a header into the corner from Maxime Lestienne’s pinpoint cross. 

Real Madrid breezed past Shaktar Donetsk with a comfortable 4-0 victory, where Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick and became the first player to have scored 80-goal landmark in the Champions League.

Madrid’s cross town rivals Atletico also opened their account with full three points after putting in an effective display against Turkish club Galatasaray. French forward Antoine Griezmann showed predatory instincts in front of goal and grabbed a brace to seal full points for Los Rojiblancos.
