PSG dynamo Blaise Matuidi is reportedly on the verge of signing a new contract with PSG, putting paid to Chelsea and Manchester City’s hopes of bringing the combative midfield operator to the Premier League.
The French international’s contract at the Parc des Princes was set to expire at the end of the season, and with Premier League interest on the rise he would have been forgiven for putting his car on the local free classifieds site in anticipation of a move.
But according to French newspaper L’Equipe, Matuidi is to soon put an end to the speculation by signing an improved deal in the coming hours, with Le 10 Sport adding that this could happen within the next few hours.
Matuidi highlighted his importance to the PSG cause last night with the opening goal in the French side’s 4-0 rout of a hapless Bayer Leverkusen in the BayArena; and the 26-year-old will reportedly earn between €5m-€6m from a new four year deal that will take him up to 2018.
His 3rd minute strike set the tone of the match, and settled any lingering PSG nerves going into the game. Matuidi managed an 89% pass completion rate, and made his presence known all across the pitch during the huge win.
Chelsea and Manchester City were, among a host of other clubs, linked with the player in recent months, with the Express reporting that the pair were preparing pre-contract offers in a bid to lure the anchor man for free at the end of the season.
Once nicknamed ‘The Chewing-Gum Man’ by Man City’s Samir Nasri on account of his ability to ‘stick’ with attackers, PSG will be thrilled if Matuidi does indeed sign a new deal, with the midfielder proving crucial to the French side’s quest for European dominance.
