Bild have claimed that the midfielder could have left the Veltins-Arena for €18m at the time of Chelsea’s bid, prompting the club to tie the youngster down with a new three-year contract, with an improved buyout clause now revealed to be at €25.5m.

Schalke have been embroiled in the long-running Draxler/Arsenal saga these last few months, and now that Meyer’s price has been disclosed, the club could be set for yet another bitter battle to keep young talent at the club in the summer.

The German, who close to breaking into Joachim Low’s national side, has played 25 games already for Schalke this season, scoring four times.

Due to his short frame and dribbling skills, he has been compared to the likes of Mario Gotze and Leo Messi in the past.
