Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel set for Tianjin Teda medical

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel set for Tianjin Teda medical

Nov 25, 2024 12:20 AM

Nigerian midfielder, John Obi Mikel, is all set to leave Chelsea in the January transfer window to join the Chinese Super League. According to reports from the Daily Mail, Mikel is set to undergo a medical on Thursday as he nears a move to the Chinese Super League side, Tianjin Teda.

The 29-year-old midfielder has been offered a package worth around £140,000 per week. He would become the latest Chelsea player to move to China, after Oscar completed his move to Shanghai SIPG last week

The Nigeria international has held talks with Valencia, while Italian club Inter Milan have shown an interest too. However, it seems that he has made up his mind, and will move to Asia instead. Mikel has been offered a three-year contract, although details of the terms are yet to be finalised.

Mikel has not played a single match this season under Antonio Conte, and has dropped down the pecking order at the club behind N’Golo Kanté, Nemanja Matić, and Cesc Fàbregas. He does not feature in the first team plans of the Italian manager, and is yet to make it to the bench this season. He has made over 370 appearances for the club, and has won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups. and the Champions League once with the Blues.

He is a solid defensive midfielder, and could have easily joined a top European club. What baffles here is that the money being offered to him is not that huge and tempting compared to what other Premier League players had been offered when they moved to the Chinese Super League.
