The Mirror reports that Chelsea reserve keeper, Thibaut Courtois, is unwilling to commit his future to the Blues; not until he receives assurances of regular playing time in West London, and the promise of a swift promotion to club number one.
The Belgian is enjoying a third successive loan spell at Atletico Madrid, where he has been a strong part of a revolution at the club. Atletico are currently challenging the exclusive domination of Real and Barca at the top of La Liga, and are going strong in the Champions League.
With Petr Cech still at the top of his game at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is faced with a very difficult situation; a situation not wholly unlike the one he had to make in his first reign as Blues manager.
When the Portuguese first arrived at Chelsea in 2004, one of his first decisions was to promote the 22-year-old Cech having just moved to the club. Carlo Cudicini, the established keeper at the time, was ousted despite being considered one of the best goalkeepers in the league.
Cech’s debut year was astonishing. He let in only 15 goals all year – a record that still stands today – and at the time, broke the record for clean sheets and longest run without conceding. His displays kept Cudicini out of the team, and denied the Italian a Premier League winners medal.
Now, Mourinho has a surprisingly similar choice to make with Cech and his challenger, Courtois. It is an unavoidable problem, and one that will leave Chelsea fans perturbed regardless of the outcome.
Both keepers are in the top bracket in the world, and both should be playing every week. It is unthinkable for either to sit on the bench; therefore a sacrifice has to be made. The question is, who will get the vote of confidence
