With a big tranche of money apparently on the way from Manchester United in exchange for Juan Mata, reports are suggesting that the cash is unlikely to stay in the Blues’ bank account very long. The summer saw the west London club snatch wide man Willian from under the noses of Tottenham as they negotiated a deal with Shaktar Donetsk, and they may be looking to reprise the trick by signing Egyptian international Mohammed Salah who has been heavily linked with Liverpool.
The player is certainly no unknown quantity for Chelsea. Salah, dubbed the Egyptian Messi, scored in both games of Chelsea’s Champions’ League group games against Basle, including the winner in Switzerland that could, on another day have cost the Blues qualification.
The Swiss club will be greatly encouraged by Chelsea’s interest as they were looking for a fee in the region of £16million, but Liverpool have been reluctant to go above £12million. There is now the prospect of an auction developing and Basle’s Swiss bank account could be in for a windfall.
It’s understood that Salah would prefer a move to Anfield as he would be likely to get more game time in Brendan Rodgers’ team, but the extra financial muscle that Chelsea can bring to bear may be sufficient to persuade both club and player that dealing with the west London outfit is the better option.
