A dramatic Supreme Novices Hurdle saw Constitution Hill lead home a 1-2 for trainer Nicky Henderson, surging clear of stable companion Jonbon up the famous hill. For the second season running, there was a wide-margin winner in the first of the Cheltenham day 1 results on the card.
Joint-favourite Dysart Dynamo took a crashing fall, leaving fellow Willie Mullins mount Kilcruit to inherit third. None could land a blow on owner Michael Buckley’s Constitution Hill, though, who lowered the course record set by Annie Power. He has earned an early quote of 9/4 with Fitzdares for the 2023 Champion Hurdle at next year’s Festival.

Edwardstone justified favouritism and avoided trouble in-running to take the Arkle. He became the first eight-year-old to win this race since the mighty Sizing Europe. This was a third Arkle success for trainer Alan King and first Festival victory for jockey Tom Cannon.
Brave Seasca fell at the third fence, forcing Saint Sam to unseat. Edwardstone was caught up in that too but it happened early enough in the race for him to recover. The Cheltenham day 1 results show him four lengths clear of the supplemented Gabynako with Irish raider Blue Lord back in third.

In the Ultima, Corach Rambler when from virtually last to first under Derek Fox as Scotland struck at the Festival. A nice racing weight helped him storm up the hill between horses for victory. Gericault Roque from out the weights just held second from Oscar Elite.
The first five home were British trained with Tea Clipper and Our Power, another from out of the handicap, completing those. Cheltenham day 1 results were certainly different to the Irish dominance of 12 months ago.

In the biggest of Cheltenham day 1 results, Honeysuckle retained her Champion Hurdle crown showing great fight to hold old rival Epatante. Henry De Bromhead’s mare perhaps wasn’t at her best but still found a way to win and extend her unbeaten record to 15 under Rules.
Honeysuckle became the third Festival favourite to win at the meeting. Main market rival Appreciate It found a year off too much to overcome and faded up the hill. Gordon Elliott second string Zanahiyr outran his odds to be third. Honeysuckle is 5/2 with Fitzdares to complete a Champion Hurdle hat-trick next year.

There was a surprise in the Cheltenham day 1 results as the Mares Hurdle went to Marie’s Rock. She showed stamina to overhaul Queens Brook up the hill and stands’ side rail as favourite Telmesomethinggirl was brought down by a faller in front as the race developed.
This completed a double for Henderson and stable jockey Nico de Boinville. Mrs Milner, last year’s Pertemps Final winner, was third ahead of Stormy Ireland – a victor on the New course in the Relkeel on new Year’s Day.

The hot favourite in Boodles, Gaelic Warrior, was turned over by Brazil in the JP McManus silks for Padraig Roche on his first runner in the UK. A slowly run renewal of the race best known as the Fred Winter saw another double-figure priced winner in the Cheltenham day 1 results here.
Another unexposed French import to the British Isles, Bell Ex One, was back in third for Paul Nicholls – his only runner of the day. HMS Seahorse and Too Friendly rounded out the first five with those pulling clear of the rest of the field.

In the last of the Cheltenham day 1 results, Stattler made up for his disappointment in last year’s Festival with an easy success in the National Hunt Chase. The big three Irish horses in the market dominated as expected.
Favourite Run Wild Fred chased Stattler home but was clear of the last season’s Albert Bartlett winner Vanillier. From 3-0 down in the Prestbury Cup, Ireland got back to 4-3 behind at the end of the opening day with this success.
