David Moyes: Manchester United still not the finished article

Oct 9, 2024 5:18 PM

An elated David Moyes heaped praise on his revitalised Manchester United side on Wednesday, with the Scot hoping that the 3-0 win over Olympiakos at Old Trafford is the turning point in their season, as he told BBC Sport:

“It was a magnificent team performance. I don’t want to come out and say ‘this is the moment’ but I hope it is.”

United have had a disastrous first season under Moyes, with the club’s Champions League campaign now their only hope of silverware this season.

After the shocking 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford, the beleaguered United boss was understandably desperate for a response, and despite the terrific showing from his players, the 50-year-old knows that United are still a work in progress,

“We have been asked a similar question before and we have not shown it,” Moyes continued,

“This is a work in progress and it will take time to get it as we really want it. It is a big job.”

“I have got a lot of things I want to do but the players gave the crowd something after we lost to Liverpool and we are delighted to see Manchester United in the last eight of the Champions League.”

“I am very pleased after Sunday’s performance and result. We needed it and I thought we did it in style. We played very well and deserved our victory.”

There have been strong rumours of discontent in the ranks at the club, with a story emerging this week of a huge falling out between a ‘senior player’ and Moyes in the aftermath of the Liverpool defeat.

But Moyes remains resolute in the face of such damaging reports, and claims he is only under pressure from the media,

“I’m not feeling any pressure from inside the club. it’s coming from [the media]. We know the job we have to do, it’s probably bigger than what I thought when I first came to the club.

“There are stories of this player falling out, or that one falling out, but it rubbish. People are looking for reasons why we are not doing well and it is only because we have not been playing well.”
