According to German daily ‘Bild’, Chelsea defender Tomas Kalas is to join Bundesliga outfit Cologne on a season long loan next season, with the 21-year-old Czech to become the second Blues centre-back to exit the club this summer.
With David Luiz heading to PSG in a mammoth £50m deal, many assumed Chelsea would go out for a replacement, but with Kallas now heading off to continue his footballing education in Germany, it seems certain that Jose Mourinho will reinforce his defence in the coming months.
Kallas came to the fore last season, putting in a massive performance against Liverpool, helping Chelsea secure a superb 2-0 win at Anfield. It was his senior debut for the club, and he was roundly praised by fans and pundits alike.
After the match, Kallas was thrilled to have finally been given the chance to showcase his defensive talents, and it was thought that he would slowly but surely be given more opportunities to play, but the powers that be at Chelsea have now deemed it necessary for the defender to go out on loan for the 2014/15 season.
Bild report that Cologne’s loan signing of Kallas will be officially announced this week, and have already started discussing how the arrival of the Czech defender will effect current centre backs Dominik Maroh and Kevin Wimmer next season.
Chelsea meanwhile are set to loan French defender Kurt Zouma out for another season, with Jose Mourinho said to be eyeing up Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala, Real Madrid youngster Rafael Varane, and Roma’s Mehdi Benatia.
