PSG have announced the signing of Chelsea star David Luiz for a reported £50m fee, making the Brazilian the most expensive defender in the history of the game.
Luiz, 27, has signed a five-year deal with the French champions, and leaves Stamford Bridge after a trophy laden three years, with the defender winning the Champions League and the Europa League, becoming a firm fan favourite in the process.
The announcement has been a long-time coming, with the deal understood to have been agreed last month, with David Luiz knowing his destination lies alongside Brazil teammate and centre-back partner Thiago Silva in the French capital for some time.
The pair played the 90 minutes of Brazil’s 3-1 win over Croatia yesterday, with Luiz almost getting on the score-sheet, directing a header from now former teammate Oscar just wide of the post in the second half.
Chelsea completed the £27m signing of former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas yesterday, and are hopeful of completing a deal for his Spanish teammate Diego Costa in the coming month.
The pair’s imminent arrival will go some way in soothing the many irate Chelsea fans, who saw David Luiz as an integral part of the squad, a superbly versatile commodity, and a wonderfully positive presence in what is a transitional dressing room.
