Euro 2020 Diary: Wright sparks Twitter meltdown, Kane vs Lukaku, Wales still whining

Euro 2020 Diary: Wright sparks Twitter meltdown, Kane vs Lukaku, Wales still whining

Oct 4, 2024 7:36 AM

Sunday was another enthralling day at the European Championships, with Czech Republic and Belgium booking their places in the quarter-finals.

The Czechs took advantage of Matthijs de Ligt’s dismissal to cause the first big shock of the tournament, securing a 2-0 victory against their previously unbeaten opponents.

Belgium kept Cristiano Ronaldo quiet on their way to a gritty 1-0 win, and the Portuguese superstar is a good place to kick-off our latest Euro 2020 Diary.

Wright sparks Twitter meltdown

Former Arsenal star Ian Wright was in good form on ITV last night, and sparked a Twitter meltdown with his comments about Ronaldo’s free-kick prowess.

Wright declared that the Portugal forward’s ability from dead-ball situations was a ‘myth’ after he failed to make several opportunities count against Belgium.

The former England striker’s ‘watch out everyone, nothing happens’ comment at half-time triggered Ronaldo’s fan boys into action on social media.

Wright would no doubt have been chuckling to himself when Ronaldo wasted another good opportunity to draw Portugal level in the second half.

Pundits wade into Kane vs Lukaku debate

Pundits Lianne Sanderson and Darren Bent were singing Romelu Lukaku’s praises yesterday, claiming on talkSPORT that he’d be better a buy than Harry Kane.

Lukaku subsequently produced an impressive performance for Belgium, playing a key role in the build-up to his team’s winning goal.
