Former referee Mark Halsey says Graham Scott was right to award Wolves’ controversial goal against Newcastle

Former referee Mark Halsey says Graham Scott was right to award Wolves’ controversial goal against Newcastle

Nov 15, 2024 10:30 PM

Newcastle United were denied all three points against Wolves last night after Willy Boly snatched an equalizer for the hosts at the death.

The goal brought about some controversy as the Wolves man appeared to foul Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka while contesting the header, and a furious Rafa Benitez approached referee Graham Scott and other officials post-game to share his plight.

With VAR in place, the ref would have had the advantage to watch the replays, and while the goal and the decision to award it continues to divide opinions, former Premier League ref Mark Halsey believes it was the right decision.

Assistant sports news editor for The Sun Phil Cadden shared the opinion of Halsey on his verified Twitter page.

A win for Newcastle would have seen them go three points clear of the relegation zone, but they are just a point above the drop zone following Wolves late goal, and the Magpies will hope the result don’t prove crucial to their survival chances come May.

Wolves also scored a controversial stoppage-time winner at St James’ Park in the reverse fixture two months ago, as the hosts expected to be awarded a freekick following Boly’s foul on Ayoze Perez.

Newcastle can’t wait for VAR to be implemented in the top-flight next season, as it would have saved them at least three points against Wolves over both legs.
