Greece 2-1 Nigeria

2010 FIFA World Cup

17 June 2010

The Greeks would score their first goals in a World Cup along with the country’s first result thanks to a red card against Nigeria.

Nigeria were the first to strike as Kalu Uche scored in the 16th minute but the lead wouldn’t last. The momentum would switch to Greece as Nigeria player Sani Kaita was given a red card in the 33rd minute. After the red card, Greece began to get some confidence and have most of the chances in the match.

They would level the match just before halftime as Dimitrios Salpingidis scored in the 44th minute with a shot that deflected of a Nigerian defender. It was a bit of luck for the Greeks but they clearly took control of the match when Nigeria were forced to play with 10.

It seemed only a matter of time before Greece took the lead in the second half and they did with a 71st minute Vasilis Torosidis pounced of the rebound from a shot to make it 2-1. Nigeria did have a few chances in the second half but generally were forced to play very defensive.

Both teams still have a chance to move to the knockout stage. Greece faces Argentina while Nigeria will play South Korea.
