Ian Wright weighs in on Aaron Ramsey signing a pre-contract agreement to join Juventus in the summer

Nov 15, 2024 11:08 PM

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey is set to join Serie A powerhouse Juventus on a free transfer at the end of the season after agreeing a pre-contract deal worth £400,000-per-week.

It ends the Welshman’s 11-year relationship with the north London side, and it will be interesting to see how manager Unai Emery gets his side going in the midfielder’s absence.

The former Cardiff City man divided opinions among Arsenal supporters, but former striker Ian Wright believes he was one of the few players that always gave their all no matter how bad things got on the pitch.

Wright also believes Arsenal are losing such a great player as a result of their mismanagement.

“He (Ramsey) is just another player who got into a situation where he could run the contract down and when you consider the contracts that have been given out to Aaron Ramsey, they just couldn’t afford to keep him alongside the players they’ve got with the contracts they are on,” the former striker said on BBC 5 Live Sport.

“So, unfortunately, we lose him and you know like he’s been magnificent. Maybe he wasn’t really appreciated at Arsenal, but I think that what people will see now is…when you watch how he plays, and the professionalism like David Ornstein has mentioned, he’s one of those players that no matter how poorly Arsenal were playing, he never hid, always showed for the ball, got loads of stick from loads of people but continued to try to make things happen in the way he sees fit and the ways he plays football.

“And again like I say, it comes down to mismanagement, we can’t get away from that, but the fact is we’re losing a great player.”

The 28-year-old has featured in 22 league games for Arsenal this term, scoring twice and assisting six goals – more than any player – and their loss will definitely be Juve’s gain.

Ramsey won three F.A Cup titles with Arsenal and he emerged the club’s Player of the Season in 2013–14 and 2017–18. The Wales international played 259 times across all competitions for the club, scoring on 61 times occasions.

Arsenal presented him with a new deal in September, but he wanted a significant pay rise, something the club weren’t to do.
