Landon Donovan is USSF Male Athlete Of The Year for 2009

Oct 11, 2024 10:19 AM

To cap off his loan move to Everton, Landon Donovan won the U.S. Soccer Federation’s Male Athlete of the Year award. This is Dononvan’s third win after back-to-back victories in 2003 and 2004, tying him with three-time winner Kasey Keller.

Previously in the year, the 28-year-old won the Honda Player of the Year award and the MLS Most Valuable Player title.

On the club level, Donovan helped lead the Los Angeles Galaxy to the 2009 MLS Cup final with 15 goals and seven assists. In World Cup qualifying, the attacker proved invaluable to the United States, chipping in three goals and nine assists in the final round of qualifying to make sure the U.S. will play in South Africa next summer.

Also collecting USSF awards were Hope Solo, the first goalkeeper to win the Female Athlete of the Year award, Luis Gil, and Tobin Heath (Youth Male and Young Female respectively).
