Liverpool need to pay £8m to land Chelsea defender

Liverpool have been efficient in concluding their businesses so early in the season so far. The Reds have already signed three players and probably will add few more to their squad, once Luis Suarez completes his move to Barcelona.

Left-back is one of the areas where Liverpool are looking to bring in a quality player. The Reds have shown heavy interest in Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno, but the deal has hit a snag as Liverpool are refusing to meet the asking price set by the Andalusian club.

As a result of which, the focus has been shifted elsewhere on other alternatives. Sporting’s Marcos Rojo, who in enjoying a terrific World Cup campaign with Argentina, has been considered while widespread reports suggest the Reds are interested in Chelsea’s left-back Ryan Bertrand.

According to GetwestLondon, Chelsea are refusing to let Bertrand go for anything less than £8m. Liverpool already had a £6m bid rejected by the Blues, while Spurs have also shown an interest in him recently.

Bertrand joined Chelsea in July 2005 and has made 28 appearances so far for the Blues. The 24-year-old spent last season on loan at Aston Villa.

My personal opinion: Chelsea are looking to sign a quality left-back in the summer. They badly need it after Ashley Cole left the club to join Roma. Going by the reports, the Londoners are planning to sign Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid. Should they go with their plans to sign the Brazilian, I can’t see Ryan Bertrand staying at Chelsea any longer, especially when Cesar Azpilicueta can easily cover the left-back role.

Obviously he presents a cheaper option than both Moreno and Rojo, but he doesn’t provide the same quality like the aforementioned defenders. So, Liverpool must decide whether they will go for a cheaper option or buy a top quality player, who can improve the squad to a great effect, for a slightly higher price.
