Liverpool’s draw raises no eyebrows

Liverpool’s draw raises no eyebrows

Oct 7, 2024 8:22 PM

The silence that greeted Liverpool’s draw away to Wolves last night was telling and the surest indicator yet that internally Liverpool recognise that there is no longer a Big Four but a Big Three, and they were merely guests at the table for a couple of years.

At least Gerrard and Benitez see the positives – Gerrard was adamant that this was a point gained and not two points dropped, and that going five games unbeaten was a sign that things had turned a corner at Anfield.

Of course, not conceding a goal to a team that has only scored 9 in 12 games (joint lowest with Birmingham) at home this season is a plus. Not scoring against a defence that has conceded 17 during the same period (only Bolton and West Ham have conceded more) is a corner turned.

Liverpool are now equal on points with Manchester City but have played two games more. They are three points behind Tottenham and 2 points ahead of Villa (who have also played two games less). I know you can read the league table, but with 15 games left for Liverpool they’ll need to do more than ‘gain a point’ away to Wolves to qualify for the Champions League next season.
