Paris St Germain continued their unbeaten start to the season as they beat Barcelona by 3-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday night. David Luiz, Marco Verratti and Blaise Matuidi all scored for the reigning French Ligue 1 Champions to cap a perfect night in front of a packed Parc De Princes. The win would come as a great satisfaction for manager Laurent Blanc as PSG were without two of their most important players, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva.
Marquinhos and David Luiz were immense at the back while Argentine Javier Pastore put in a man of the match performance. PSG’s fluid attacks terrorised the entire Spanish side’s defense throughout the first half, Brazilian Lucas Moura being the chief architect on the right wing.
Lucas Moura Heat Map
The 22 year old gave Barcelona left back Jordi Alba a torrid night using his raw pace and dazzling dribbling ability to get in behind the back line. First he picked out Luiz from a free kick as PSG opened the scoring on the night. Lucas was energetic throughout, always making himself available to receive the ball and make something happen in the final third.
The winger later claimed that PSG would go far in the Champions League if they can keep up their performance, “I’m very happy tonight as we beat a great team. I hope we can wake up now. If we can repeat this kind of performance, we’re capable of going far.“
Lucas has come under stanch criticism ever since his £44.3m transfer from Sao Paolo in January 2013. Despite moving to Europe with a huge reputation being named the best player of the 2011 South American Youth Championship a, he failed up justify his price tag.
Lucas made his national debut aged 19 and has 31 caps for Brazil. A string of poor performances meant he was left out of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s World Cup squad. However as Tuesday night showed, the winger is now finally ready to revel in the highest echelons of European Football.
