Manchester City progressed to the quarter finals of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Chelsea at the Etihad.
Goals from Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri secured City’s passage through to the last eight, and gave Manuel Pellegrini only his second ever win over Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea struggled to get into the game, and were comprehensively beaten tonight, as the entire City team harried and hounded their opposite numbers from the very first minute.
Here are the player ratings:
Manchester City
Costel Pantilimon: 6/10
Had almost nothing to do, as Chelsea failed to muster a shot on target all game.
Gael Clichy: 6/10
Bombed up and down to good effect, the Frenchman was a little suspect with his crossing, but worked hard.
Vincent Kompany: 7/10
Contained the Chelsea forward line well, but got a little ahead of himself concerning decisions at times.
Joleon Lescott: 7/10
A solid performance from the former Wolves centre-back. Never looked troubled by any of the Chelsea forwards.
Pablo Zabaleta: 7/10
Attacked with intent, and defended with heart; the Argentine beat Hazard on the day, and had a great all-round game.
James Milner: 7/10
Deployed to help nullify the Chelsea wing wizards, Milner worked his socks off, and is such an excellent player to call upon.
Yaya Toure: 7/10
The big Ivorian battled hard, and took a revenge of sorts on the Chelsea midfield, as he bossed proceedings from the middle of the park.
Javi Garcia: 6/10
Did a quiet but effective job in the centre, proving that he is a much more solid option to Demichelis.
David Silva: 8/10
Man of the match, and deservedly so. The diminutive Spaniard was at the heart of almost every City attack, and was also tireless when not in possession. Set up Samir Nasri for the killer second goal. Class.
Came off for Jesus Navas late on.
Stevan Jovetic: 7/10
Could well have got an eight, but his appalling dive put paid to any further praise. His well-taken goal set City on their way, but there was no need for such poor theatrics.
Came off for Samir Nasri on the hour mark.
Edin Dzeko: 6/10
Battled hard up top, and set up Jovetic for the opener. Still lacking in comparison to Negredo and Aguero.
Came off for Alvaro Negredo late on.
Chelsea
Petr Cech: 6/10
Could do nothing about the goals.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 5/10
Was at fault for the opening goal, and could not get forward enough.
David Luiz: 6/10
Some decent interceptions kept City from adding to their tally, the Brazilian was lucky not to have been dismissed for a number of yellow card-worthy fouls however.
Gary Cahill: 6/10
Not at his best perhaps, but still fought bravely.
Branislav Ivanovic: 5/10
A couple of spectacular clearances aside, the big Serb was a shadow of his usual beastly self.
Nemanja Matic: 5/10
Lost the midfield battle this time to Yaya et al, and failed to make a real impression.
John Obi Mikel: 5/10
Inexplicably failed to track Samir Nasri for the second City goal, and seemed out of his depth at times.
Ramires: 5/10
Raced around the pitch to little end this evening, the Brazilian had a little too much on his plate it seemed.
Came off for Fernando Torres just after the hour.
Eden Hazard: 5/10
Shackled well by the City defence, Hazard barely had an effect.
Willian: 4/10
Practically anonymous, Willian was a relative passenger.
Came off late on for Oscar.
Samuel Eto’o: 5/10
Didn’t do anything wrong in the first half, but was bizarrely taken off at half time for Mohamed Salah, who was woeful up top for a time, before adding little on the wing for the final 20.
