Manchester United News – Hargreaves, Tevez, Rooney and Sevilla

Nov 14, 2024 10:21 PM

With Manchester United stalling Senna’s expected transfer, rumours are rife that the club is eyeing other midfield targets. SkySports claimed a couple of days ago that Manchester United had made a bid for Diarra, while news about United being interested in Owen Hargreaves is coming out as well.

Regular readers will know how often I’ve written about why Manchester United should sign Hargreaves, and we already know that Hargreaves wants to play in the Premiership provided he’s going to a Champions League club. Nothing has been made open but we’ll know in the next week or so whether Manchester United are going to sign either of Hargreaves or Diarra. At least we know this much – we’re definitely getting one more midfielder (and possibly two more) before the transfer season ends.

The Corinthians and MSI (investment group backing the Corinthians) have denied that Manchester United have bid for Tevez. The news doesn’t surprise me, but if Manchester United were to move for strikers, Tevez should be the one. He’s very similar to Rooney, and while people say that you should have a linkup player like Saha alongside Rooney, the fact is that having two extremely talented and young strikers upfront will give our team a whole new attacking dimension.

Both Tevez and Rooney are very adept at falling back and bringing the ball out of the midfield, and their physical strength will be an added bonus as well.

Tevez vs Torres Equal in pace, equal in their conversion rates, Tevez is younger, stronger and possibly cheaper. Is it that hard to make a decision

And before anyone says that Tevez had a poor World Cup, I’d ask you to watch Argentina’s matches again and to actually focus on how Tevez played on and off the ball. The kid has amazing talent.

Manchester United open Old Trafford’s new sections in style by dispatching Sevilla for 3-0, including a valuable first-team goal for David Jones. The highly-rated young midfielder oozes of talent (see his through-ball for Ronaldo’s second goal against Oxford Utd here) and if he keeps this form up he could very well be fast-tracked into the team. At the very least, I expect him to go past Darren Fletcher and Liam Miller and stand alongside O’Shea and Giggs as one of Ferguson’s go-to backup midfielders by the end of the next season.

You can read the full match-report for the match on ManUtd.com. Events of note – David Jones’ goal, Kuszczak playing the second half, Heinze finally getting his first game at Old Trafford this year, Phil Bardsley giving an impressive performance again and Daniel Alves shining for Sevilla.

What will worry Ferguson though is that Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney are injured and may miss Manchester United’s opening match against Fulham next week. Rooney and Scholes are also unsure whether their red cards will be overturned by the FA or not – the pair have appealed and will know for sure next week. If Rooney doesn’t start, Solskjaer could start alongside Saha, and despite the pair being injury prone they are also two of the most creative players United have in the squad. It’s not ideal (considering that we could have Rooney and Tevez playing), but it should be good enough to dispatch 14 out of 19 other Premiership teams.

And while we’re at it, you might want to read up on my understanding on why Silvestre had his contract extended.

Ferguson speaks out against the ridiculously high transfer fees placed on players this summer – and blames Chelsea’s high spending for the increase.

He’s also gone ga-ga over Jonny Evans and Danny Simpson, two young defenders who stood out in the preseason and will be going out on loan to Antwerp.
