Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on De Gea, Carrick, Romero

Oct 30, 2024 11:16 AM

We sum up all the major Manchester United transfer news:

De Gea: Likely to stay at Manchester United

The Spaniard was so close to joining Real Madrid on the transfer deadline day last summer. Had it been not for Madrid’s negligence and complications in paper works, De Gea by now would have been playing for Los Blancos.

The deal fell through at the final minute, which was a devastating blow for him as he really wanted to return to Spain, and in turn he signed a long term contract at United.

It gives United a chance now to make a profit from De Gea’s deal in the future. Not that United want to sell him, or looking to sell him, but should any future opportunity arise for De Gea to move on, United would be better placed in the negotiation table. But the big question is, do Real Madrid still consider him as their first choice target

Probably, No. According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Real Madrid have briefed them that De Gea, whose current market price is at €35m, no longer remains a priority for them.

The general feeling I got from reviewing Madrid newspapers throughout this season is that Zinedine Zidane, the Madrid coach doesn’t think that the club should make an investment in the goalkeeping department. Keylor Navas has been enjoying a good season, and signing another goalkeeper is all but a waste of space and money.

Carrick unsure about United future

Gone are those days where retaining senior and aged players at United were seen as a priority. Had Sir Alex Ferguson still been in charge, Michael Carrick would have got a new contract by now. But can’t say that now with certainty.

In fact, the player himself  is not sure whether he will still be a Manchester United player next season.

The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and he is unsure whether he will be given a contract extension by the Old Trafford club.

“I am not sure yet to be honest. I haven’t heard anything just at the moment, no. Hopefully [I will] some time soon. I have been here a long time, I have had some great times here [since 2006] and I love the club. It’s a great place to play. Playing games like against City keeps you having that buzz and enthusiasm to play for longer,” said Carrick.

“I am not making a big deal of it, to be honest. I will just have to wait and see what happens. I am quite relaxed about it.”

Sergio Romero wants to establish himself at United

Romero has lost his place to De Gea (no surprise there) but he is not looking to leave United and return to Argentina.

Currently on International duty, Romero has told the reporters (ESPN Argentina) that thought of leaving Old Trafford hasn’t crossed his mind as yet.

“No one talked to me, they took it from the press and nothing else, my head is placed in Manchester. In the matches I played, I’ve proved I can play. The dream of mine is to grab this place and defend it, and it doesn’t cross my mind to come to Argentina.”
