Manchester United weighing up move for longtime target Defour

Dec 13, 2024 8:45 PM

Manchester United are considering a move for Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour, according to Sky Sports.

The 22-year-old has been a target for United for some time, and after Defour suffered a serious foot injury last September, Sir Alex Ferguson personally wrote a note to the Belgium international, expressing his sympathy about Defour’s injury and wishing him well on his recovery.

After four and a half months out, Defour returned at the end of January, and after netting only once for the remainder of the season after his return, Defour has opened the new season with two goals in Standard’s first four league matches.

Defour has been linked with several of Europe’s top clubs, and recently, Liverpool were rumored to be considering a swoop for his signature. However, it looks like United could be about to firm up their long-time interest in the Standard captain.

Defour has been at Standard since 2006, and he’s been the club’s captain since 2007. He has 24 caps and one goal for Belgium, and he captured the 2007 Golden Shoe award as the top player in the Belgian First Division for the previous year.
