Money Can’t Buy The Best – Germany Legend Slams Premier League Clubs

Oct 7, 2024 8:24 PM

Bayern Munich and Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer has slammed the Premier League clubs that they cannot attract and buy the best players in the world despite having a windfall of money in recent years.

While the Premier League is the richest football league in the world, none of the top players in the game ply their trade in the clubs in England, a fact used by Beckenbauer to highlight the notion money can’t buy everything.

“They [Premier League clubs] can’t buy everyone,” Beckenbauer was quoted as saying to Bild.

“Most importantly, they can’t buy [Lionel] Messi, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic and our Thomas Muller. They don’t have any among the best in the world. We still have great footballers in Germany.”

Earlier this summer, Manchester United were believed to be ready to make an astonishing €120m offer to lure Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller to Old Trafford, a move which was rejected by the Bavarian club’s manager, Pep Guardiola.

There have been repeated noises made by the Premier League clubs sounding out the top players across the major European leagues, but as Beckenbauer says, the clubs have never been close to signing the players at the absolute top like Messi and Ronaldo.

Bayern’s honorary president Beckenbauer’s comments can be interpreted as the club’s firm stance on Muller, whom they believe to be an indispensable asset and issues a clear warning to any interested party that the 26-year-old is non-transferable.
