Newcastle United sacked Steve Bruce last month after a series of miserable performances in the Premier League and the Magpies are thought to be keen on appointing the former Arsenal manager Unai Emery as his replacement.

The Premier League club recently underwent a £300 million takeover and the new Saudi owners are looking to bring in a top-quality manager. The new owners are thought to be keen on improving the playing squad as well.

Newcastle have made a disastrous start to their Premier League campaign and they are currently 19th in the league table with six defeats and four draws in 10 league matches.

A club of their stature will be expected to perform a lot better and the new owners cannot afford to let Newcastle go back down to the championship this season.

The Magpies are in desperate need of a quality manager who can transform their fortunes and they will have to improve the playing squad during the January transfer window as well.

According to Patrick Berger from Sport1,  Villarreal manager Unai Emery is currently the favourite to take over at St James’s Park and the Premier League club want to complete his appointment during the next international break.

The report further adds that the Magpies are open to paying a massive transfer fee in order to buy him out of his Villarreal contract.

Emery has proven his quality across multiple clubs and he could prove to be an outstanding upgrade on Bruce. The Spanish manager has enjoyed great success in the European competitions and he has won the Europa League multiple times with different clubs.

Newcastle need a proven winner like him and it remains to be seen whether they can pull off the move in the coming weeks.

As far as the bookies are concerned, Belgium manager Roberto Martinez is currently the odds on favourite to replace Steve Bruce. The likes of Eddie Howe, Lucien Favre and Paulo Fonseca are in the running as well.
