Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly shown an interest in signing Swansea City’s highly rated defender, Alfie Mawson, this summer.
According to reports from The Sun, Spurs will make an offer in the region of £15 million in order to secure the services of the defender, who joined the club from Barnsley last season.
Newcastle United manger Rafael Benitez is keen to sign a top defender this summer. Should the Magpies be interested in signing Mawson
The 23-year-old is a highly talented and promising centre-back. He made 27 Premier League appearances for the Swans in 2016/17, and scored four goals.
Mawson is very good at interception, which shows he has a good understanding of the game. However, his real strength lies in passing and distribution from the back.
Benitez would be interested in having a ball playing defender in the side. The Spaniard signed Daniel Agger during his time at Liverpool and he went on to become one of the key players for the Reds.
Mawson has a bright future ahead of him, no doubt, but he is probably not yet ready to play week in and week out for a Champions League side like Spurs. He will have to wait for his chances.
On the other hand, Newcastle United can offer him regular game time, which should benefit him in his development.
Given his age and talent, he would represent a smart signing for Newcastle. Benitez has been reportedly handed a massive transfer war-chest, and it’s time for the Magpies to make a real statement by signing a top emerging talent like Mawson.
