Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has revealed the Red Devils are in talks with Louis van Gaal’s targets and all of them are willing to join him at Old Trafford this summer.
The Holland boss was appointed United’s manager for the next season earlier in May and the Dutchman will take over the reign at Old Trafford after his national side’s campaign in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The former United goalkeeper claims Van Gaal has handed the list he wants at Old Trafford to the Red Devils’ chief executive Ed Woodward. Schmeichel also praised the club for appointing Old Trafford favourite Ryan Giggs as the No 2 for the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager.
“He’s a big enough name and I know the list that he’s given Ed Woodward,” Schmeichel said.
“All of them are in talks and are willing to join Manchester United. So you can argue that United still has the brand, the players still want to come here. Is it going to work I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see. It’s a long summer.”
“Ryan Giggs has been at Manchester United for a very long time, even before I arrived. I’ve watched him in a few games in the last season. This guy is eternally young! To have him stay and become the assistant manager is a fantastic thing for everyone.”
“Van Gaal has picked the right guy to assist him because he needs to understand what Manchester United is. He’s in a hurry to understand that, and the sooner the better,” the Dane concluded.
United have long been linked with a move in signing Southampton left-back Luke Shaw. According to the Manchester Evening News, the England international will be the first arrival at Old Trafford this summer, followed by midfielders Kevin Strootman and Jordy Clasie, defenders Mats Hummels and Bruno Martins Indi, along with winger Yevhen Konoplyanka.
Should Van Gaal and Woodward manage to land all of the above targets, United team would look much stronger and could challenge for the title next season, with no other competitions to focus.
