Peter Mokaba Stadium: 2010 Venue

Peter Mokaba Stadium: 2010 Venue

Oct 30, 2024 5:30 PM

Another one of the five new stadiums that will comprise the ten venues for World Cup 2010 is Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Peter Mokaba Stadium is one of the two venues that will host only four group stage matches, with the other being Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

As of late October, the stadium was 96% complete, with only some paint and lawn work left to complete before its official unveiling in January 2010. The completed stadium will have a seating capacity of 46,000.

Peter Mokaba Stadium is named after late South African politician Peter Mokaba, who had been a member of the South African parliament, a deputy minister during Nelson Mandela’s tenure as president, and the president of the African National Congress’ youth wing.

It’s actually the second Peter Mokaba Stadium, as, instead of upgrading the former Peter Mokaba Stadium, the decision was made to build a new stadium next to the old Peter Mokaba Stadium, which is now known as the Pietersburg Stadium.
