Phil Hay sheds light on Leeds United’s situation if the Championship fail to restart

Oct 11, 2024 8:32 AM

While the governing body in the UK is hopeful that football will return amid the coronavirus pandemic, the situation is still far from ideal.

Norwich City sporting director Stuart Webber has called for Championship sides to not be promoted to the Premier League if the football season fails to complete. It’s a complex scenario, and things could get messy if clubs opt for legal proceedings.

It has been reported widely that clubs in the Championship want to complete the current season. But despite their desire to do so, whether they will be able to complete it remains a different issue.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has shed light on the matter on his personal Twitter account. He has claimed that the situation is very much “up in the air” with many teams feeling that it won’t be possible to resume the season.

up in the air. Clubs in the Championship (like Leeds) want to resume. Others don’t think it will be possible. Any sensible PPG metric has Leeds finishing top two so their back is covered in that sense.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are top the table with a healthy seven-point advantage over teams in the playoff positions. There are only nine games remaining, and although Leeds can still choke and throw the lead away, it would be a massive injustice to them if the season is declared null and void.

If the EFL consider the PPG metric to determine the final league position, Leeds would still get promoted. Hay claimed earlier that the Whites will only complain and take legal steps if they are denied promotion.
