AIR TO AIR wasn’t best drawn towards the stands’ side in the International Stakes at Ascot last time, doing well to finish 11th of 21. He was third best in his group behind the luckless Aratus (sixth overall) and Lion Tower (ninth), and the form was boosted when the last-named won at Redcar next time. Today’s smaller field will suit and, since gelded, his turf record away from Ascot reads 11721 (3-5), with the seventh place by less than two lengths after meeting trouble and the runner-up effort by a neck. WOLVERHAMPTON 7.20
WOLVERHAMPTON’s Tapeta surface is strongly favouring front-runners at the moment, probably because the heat melts the wax binding, creating more kickback, which makes it harder to hold-up horses to make up ground. Predicting who is going to lead has been the route to profits here this summer, especially over the shorter trips, and it looks as though NEWYORKSTATEOFMIND will lead in this 6f handicap under in-form Nicola Currie. The five-year-old finished last of five at Bath on his latest outing but is just one from 29 on turf and best judged on all-weather figures of three from 13. His two course outings have produced a 5f win and neck second over the same trip and he does stay the extra furlong. I’ve saved on Scott Dixon’s REBEL REDEMPTION, who is back down to his last winning mark of 69. That win came over course and distance in March when he made all the running. He’s well drawn in stall 3.
