Originally, I was going to side with APPLE ROCK in this 0-120 handicap hurdle based on the promise of his Leicester effort two runs back where he raced in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail. However, he’s since been pulled up at Wincanton and has only ever won in fields of 12 or more runners. His patient running style could prove vulnerable in today’s five-runner contest – his full record in fields of 11 or fewer runners reads 53466P (0-6)/.

I prefer the claims of SOME DETAIL, who can usually be relied upon to run his race on right-handed tracks. His hurdles record this way round, over trips of 2m4f or further, reads 2621237 (1-7), improving to 22123 (1-5) when returned to the track within six weeks of his previous outing. A stiffer test of stamina would have been preferable but he’s still worth buying in the 50-25-10 Spreadex race market or supporting at 7-2 in the fixed odds betting.

BLAME THE GAME has been strong in the overnight market for this 3m novices’ handicap chase and, with trainer Chris Gordon in fine form, he’s worth chancing at the early 15-2 with Spreadex. He was a big eyecatcher at about this time last year when third in a handicap hurdle at Fakenham, doing well to finish so close after racing in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail. He bolted up by 13 lengths at Fontwell next time and though yet to show much over fences, this is his time of year and he looks well handicapped.
