Real Madrid striker to help Manchester United sign £20m target?

Manchester United are likely to make a move for Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne and will offer Javier Hernandez as a part of the deal.

The 24-year-old fullback has repeatedly rejected contract extension on his current deal which ends in 2016, and has been a reported target of both Chelsea and Manchester United.

Southampton remain confident to keep hold of their prized asset, but should he continues to turn down offers, the Saints may have to consider a sale this summer.

United are likely to finish within the top four which means they can offer Clyne the Champions League football he craves. Southampton value the defender at around £20m, but his price could increase if Chelsea decide to enter into a bidding war with United in the summer.

Chelsea scouts have repeatedly watched him over the past few weeks but ESPN claims that United hope to lure the Southampton defender by offering Hernandez as a part of the deal.

Hernandez has suffered a disappointing season on loan at Real Madrid, while Louis van Gaal has made it clear that the Mexico international is not wanted at Old Trafford. The 26-year-old has only made two league starts for Los Blancos and has scored four goals so far. He has already reportedly rejected offers from the MLS and wishes to return to the Premier League.

Southampton could offer him the ideal opportunity as he would get regular game time, something he has badly missed over the past few seasons.

With Rafael failing to cement his place and Antonio Valencia merely seen as a stop-gap solution, Van Gaal has identified right-back as a key area to strengthen this summer.

Clyne has impressed this season but should United pay such high transfer fee for yet another English full back when cheaper and better alternatives are available in the market
