Should negative headlines be part of the parcel?

Should negative headlines be part of the parcel?

Nov 15, 2024 12:26 AM

On the back of Wayne Rooney’s comments again being published all over the media; should this be part of the package when any player decides to play in the Premier League

After the striker’s poor performance in England’s European qualifier against Montenegro, the man-in-the-limelight seemed to quash reports that he had been suffering from an ankle injury and assured fans that he is yet to miss a training session this season.

It has been a constant occurrence for the English people to expect of late; when they open up a daily newspaper to read more allegations made by women or silly comments that the national ‘heroes’ make covering the front or back pages.

But should we have to expect this

I’m sure I am one of a massive amount of football fanatics who would rather read stories of their exploits in the game and not outside of it. I am not a Manchester United fan so my opinion is nothing other than neutral, but it would please me if the heavily-relied on Rooney silenced his critics by scoring goals.

He’s done it so often last season, with his 34 goals nearly guiding United to a four-successive Premier League title, so what is the problem this season for Rooney Many will use the excuse of him being in the limelight too often for his own liking this season, but only his own actions have caused this. Being fairly young, I used to see Wayne as a role model but that faded with a ‘click of the thumbs’ when allegations about his private life whilst wife Coleen was pregnant made the headlines.

I’m not here to criticise because the boy clearly has potential and as mentioned, he is heavily-relied on throughout the country, but is it that hard to behave like a normal hard-working person

Surely these headlines are going to put off the top talents such as Messi and Villa joining the world’s best league because there is a high risk that their every step could be followed. Footballers will join the league because of its football talents and the huge fan base it has, but my only worry is that the headlines English players make are eventually going to have a negative effect on the transfers that clubs make.

I hope to be proved wrong in the future and nothing would please me more than seeing Rooney silence his critics with a hat-trick against West Brom. For now, I look forward to the international break being over so I can finally get back to the enjoyable routine of watching Match of The Day on a Saturday night.
