Manchester United and Liverpool’s hopes of signing Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana has taken a new twist after Southampton confirmed they will not allow any of their players leave the club this summer.
The left-back and the midfielder has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and Anfield respectively. Liverpool have tabled an improved £25m offer for Lallana as their manager Brendan Rodgers is keen on securing a deal for the England international.
The Reds confirmed the signing of Southampton striker Rickie Lambert on Monday. After the departure of English striker to his boyhood club, the Saints have made it clear they are in no mood to allow their players leave, despite receiving multiple offers.
“#SaintsFC can confirm that we have received multiple offers for some of our players in the past weeks. We are staying true to our plan and vision and, as a result, we have no need to accept any offers. #saintsfc,” Southampton tweeted via their official twitter account.
Meanwhile, former Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino joined Tottenham Hotspur as the Argentine will be North London club’s new boss for the next season. The Saints have confirmed the club will active in the market to find a replacement for Lambert, who signed for Liverpool.
However, Southampton confirmed the club will only enter into the market after the Saints announce their new manager.
A statement read on Twitter as saying: “We are deep in the process of appointing a new manager who will continue to move our club forward. #saintsfc. It remains our preference not to partake in any transfers until the new manager is in place. #saintsfc.”
“When Rickie Lambert requested to leave for @LFC, the club felt it could not stand in the way of his boyhood dream. #saintsfc. ur intention is to source a quality replacement who will fill [Lambert’s] shoes now but also for many years to come. #saintsfc.”
With their latest statement, it will be a major blow for United and Liverpool, who were closing in on signing Shaw and Lallana in the summer transfer window.
United have Patrice Evra, who penned a new deal to extend his Old Trafford stay for another year last month. However, the Frenchman is ageing and the Red Devils need fresh legs in their full-back position.
Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers could turn his attention on Xherdan Shaqiri from Bayern Munich and Manchester City midfielder James Milner, if he fails to sign Lallana.
