Sporting Lisbon have lost their case before the Court of Arbitration against Doyen Sports group over their controversial transfer of Marcos Rojo to Manchester United. 

Mojo joined United in 2014 for a reported fee of €20m from Lisbon. However, the Portugal club got involved into a conflict with Rojo’s third-party owner Doyen Sports that went to court. 

Doyen Sports were alleged to have granted Sporting Lisbon a loan of €4m in exchange of 75% Rojo’s economic rights. 

Sporting Lisbon president Bruno de Carvalho confirmed that the club had retained the full transfer fee from Manchester United, but none of them went into the account of Doyen Sports, as Sporting had returned the €4m to the third party owner with the belief the contract was invalid. 

Carvalho was furious with Doyen Sport for conducting business with the permission of the club’s management. 

But the Court of Arbitration for Sport has now given the verdict against Sporting, the club confirmed the judgement in a statement to the nation’s stock market. Sporting have been ordered to pay the agency €12m as 75 percent of the court’s valuation of the deal.
