The Transfer Lens: Cesc Fabregas off to Chelsea or Manchester United?

Oct 3, 2024 7:13 AM

It has fast become THE main talking point so far in the summer transfer window, with Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas seemingly teetering on the edge of leaving the Nou Camp, and to either Manchester United or Chelsea. Arsenal fans, look away now!

Late on Wednesday, Twitter exploded into life, with a number of ‘legit’ Spanish sources claiming that Fabregas would indeed sign for Chelsea in a €33m deal + add ons. These claims followed on from the Daily Star reporting that Fabregas has actually completed a medical with the Blues (which seems highly unlikely at this stage).

Spanish radio stations RAC1 and ‘Catradio’ both were said to have insisted that the Chelsea/Fabregas deal was done and dusted, but with no official word coming from either club, or indeed the player, much of what was being said was taken with a pinch of salt.

But then there is the now infamous Gerard Pique video, in which he is heard telling Vincente del Bosque that Fabregas WILL leave Barcelona this summer, and for €33m:

All seemed to be falling nicely into place for Chelsea, but then ‘Marca’ came forward with the claim that Manchester United were still very much in the hunt, as the Red Devils are not a Champions League rival to Barcelona next season, whereas allowing Cesc to join Chelsea would be directly strengthening a competitor.

The Chelsea rumour took a further hit courtesy of La Liga oracle Guillem Balague. While the Spanish football expert did not dismiss the story in its entirety, he did stress that no deal had been agreed (rather obliterating the Daily Star’s earlier claims concerning an unexpected medical).

Cesc hasnt got a deal with Chelsea, it doesnt matter what Pique or others say. Not yet. Conversations taking place but NO DEAL YET. Not yet — Guillem Balague (@GuillemBalague) June 4, 2014

It is a transfer saga that has gripped the footballing world, and considering the pace at which it is moving, we shouldn’t have too long to wait for it’s dramatic conclusion!

What do you think What will be the outcome Will Chelsea or United grab the diminutive Spaniard
