Tottenham have sacked manager Andre Villas-Boas, after an appalling result against Liverpool at White Lane yesterday left the club in disarray.
The Portuguese manager has been under huge pressure in recent weeks, with a string of poor results leaving Spurs languishing seventh in the Premier League.
Spurs’ 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool yesterday was their worst at the Lane for 16 years, and the club have acted quickly in an attempt to stop their slide down the table.
“The club can announce that agreement has been reached with head coach Andre Villas-Boas for the termination of his services,” said a Spurs statement.
“The decision was by mutual consent and in the interests of all parties.”
The heavy defeat on Sunday followed on from an embarrassing 6-0 loss to Man City, and a demoralising 3-0 home defeat to London rivals West Ham in the last few months.
Tottenham spent heavily in the summer, with the £85 million received from the Gareth Bale sale going into recruiting a host of new players to offset the loss of their most influential player.
This has backfired however, with the likes of Roberto Soldado, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela failing to find their feet so far this season; and now Villas-Boas has paid the ultimate price.
