Twitter erupts after news of Lampard’s Chelsea exit

Oct 1, 2024 10:36 PM

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has revealed that he is to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, sending the Blues faithful into a state of shock. The 35-year-old has been at the club for 13 years, with three Premier League titles, a European Cup and a Europa League title just some of the silverware he got his hands on, and his departure will see the end of one of the most iconic club/player relationships in the English top flight.

It was certainly a surprise announcement, with Lampard fully expected to sign a new contract with Chelsea, despite his ‘release’ from the club a few weeks ago, and amid reported interests form the MLS. There even were rumours, which at the time were not fully appreciated, that he was considering hanging up his boots if he were to leave West London, and if he doesn’t fancy a sojourn in America, then we may very well seen the end of the midfielder!

Regardless of his next step, Chelsea fans are still reeling from the news, and aren’t looking too far past the fact that one of their most treasured sons is finally leaving after so many action-packed years. It is a departure that will shake the club to its core, and will effect the fans even more than when Didier Drogba left the club two years ago.

As expected, Twitter has burst into life following the news, with fans, pundits, ex-players and even neutrals expressing their thanks, respect and appreciation for all he achieved at Chelsea:

You won’t find a more dedicated professional than Frank Lampard. An amazing career that hasn’t finished yet. #goodluckfrank

Not a Chelsea fan but it’s quite sad that Lampard is leaving — indiaaa. (@IndiaDickinsonn) June 2, 2014

Anyone trying to be rational tonight doesn’t get the club. This is Frank Lampard. Give the bloke a 50-year deal. Huge loss.
