Great news for Manchester United fans! David de Gea has signed a new four year deal at United, the club has confirmed.

After enduring a turbulent summer, where the Spain goal keeper was one of the verge of leaving the club on the transfer deadline day to join Spanish giants Real Madrid only to remain at the club as the deal couldn’t be processed on time, his dramatic U-turn and subsequent signing a new deal will boost the spirits in the United camp.

De Gea said after signing the new deal: “I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career. I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans.

“Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career. I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my teammates to be successful.”

Louis van Gaal also expressed his happiness with the extension and said that he expected De Gea to stay at Old Trafford for a long time:

“I am absolutely delighted David has signed a new contract. He is one of the best goalkeepers in world football. I am very pleased that he will be part of the team for many years to come. David made a very important contribution to our performance last season and he has been the club’s Player of the Year for the last two seasons. He is a popular player who is keen to learn and enhance his game. At such a young age for a goalkeeper, he has many years ahead of him.”

The Spain international joined Manchester United in 2011 and has made 175 appearances for the club, winning the Premier League title in 2013.

The 24-year-old was elected as Manchester United’s best player (winning Matt Busby Player of the Year award) last season. De Gea has played in the midweek for Spain and he will be expected to start against Liverpool on Saturday.

Let us take a look at some of the reactions on Twitter:

De Gea’s new deal confirmed. Even if it just gets #MUFC a bigger fee, it’s their best piece of business in a while https://t.co/jIa9VPXUbM — Oliver Kay (@OliverKayTimes) September 11, 2015

Don’t begin to think De Gea won’t start for United tomorrow. Against Liverpool, at Old Trafford, after signing a new deal… perfect timing. — Scott Bond (@_ScottBond_) September 11, 2015

And ‘There’s only one Jorge Mendes’. #DeGea — Samuel Luckhurst (@samuelluckhurst) September 11, 2015

Even if there is a release clause, De Gea deserves a pay rise to reflect standing in the team. Still on same terms he got when he signed. — Rob Dawson (@RobDawsonMEN) September 11, 2015

Don’t think many saw this one coming even after deadline day – but great news for Man Utd as David de Gea signs a new four-year contract. — Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) September 11, 2015

David De Gea signs at Man Utd. The next question is how much it would cost Real Madrid now. Presumably Jorge Mendes consulted Perez. — Paul Hayward (@_PaulHayward) September 11, 2015

De Gea was a reported target of La Liga giants Real Madrid and the player secretly had spoken his desires to return to Spain. The saga generated huge hype and at one point of time it felt that De Gea’s departure from United was just a question of when.

Real Madrid dithered as they refused to meet Manchester United’s 40m asking price. However, with time running away on the deadline day, they made a fresh approach to sign him, but United wanted Keylor Navas as a part of the deal, in the end the deal fell through as it couldn’t be done within the time.

De Gea initially struggled at United, failing to cope with physical side of the English football, but he has gone on to become one of the best goal keepers in the world at the moment.

We have seen before (Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez et al) that signing a new contract hardly means anything in modern football, and there are every possibilities that Real Madrid may come for him next summer again, although Los Blancos will have to pay an astronomical transfer fee for his services.
