Wolves are closing in on new managerial appointment

Oct 11, 2024 3:19 AM

Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the verge of appointing Bruno Lage as their new manager, according to BBC journalist Simon Stone.

Nuno Espirito Santo recently left the club after guiding them to a 13th place finish in the Premier League last season.

Lage has been out of work for more than a year after leaving Benfica at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

Bruno Lage now clear to sort out the remaining details of becoming next boss @Wolves. As expected, FA have ratified his post-Brexit arrival.

He impressed whilst in charge of the Águias, leading the club to one Primeira Liga title.

Stone added that the 45-year-old successfully acquired FA approval to work in England, and Wolves will now be taking steps to seal the deal.

Despite still being a young manager, Lage boasts 24-years of management experience as his career started in 1997 as an assistant at Portugal based Vitória de Setúbal.

Lage is unlikely to take long to adapt to England given that he previously worked for Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday, albeit as an assistant manager.

Several managers have been linked with a move to Wolves including Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard and Rafa Benitez.

It could be beneficial for Wolves to appoint another coach from Portugal.

Not only did they taste success under Nuno’s methods, but up to nine of their first-team players speak Portuguese as their first language, with seven of their players hailing from Portugal and two from Brazil.

The risk that Wolves will be taking by appointing Lage as their manager is that he has never managed on a full-time basis in England or any of Europe’s top five leagues.

He has spent most of his career as an assistant and youth coach, with his stint with Benfica being the first time he managed a senior team on a full-time basis.
